Richard id hate to use a set of chambers that made the lower end any weaker, i mean with stock pipes its pretty weak already on the MAB models. It sounds like a spacer might be in order later on for him if he wants to lift up the lower end power delivery a tad.
The thing is for long highway type riding the slightly lower gearing you propose will put the high gear cruising up another few hundred rpms. While that may be good for a lot of situations in places where you dont have or do vast distances.
With this final drive mod now when youre cruising at around 60mph for example you'll now be at over 4,000 rpms.
Martin place the carbs on the edge of a table and let the part youre working on just protude over the edge. Then sit below them on the floor so you can work on the threading, now anything during the cutting process will fall vertically downwards pass the taps flutes.
Its quick and painless threading the holes, just follow the tips for not going to deep.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

Allan,

That is indeed the issue. The GT is a big old softie and is best suited to cruising. Pipes and ports make for a more exciting ride but renders it slightly less suitable for long distances.

Just for comparison, and it's a ludicrous one but I'll do it anyway, our FZR400 does about 6,000 at 60, so 4,000 is not so bad.
