When rotor marks line up is when spark should happen, more or less. It will get you close enough for start. Some people set timing by marks, they say they are not high performance engines and not that critical, but I set mine with a dial gauge.

Spent first lockdown day pulling carbs to bits and checking. Second day checking coils, points, did the pencil trick.tdc then set points gap.when tdc there is no sign of timing mark's(L or R) on rotor.tdc on left side-points opening and the f (fire) mark shows on rotor. Still getting good spark. No smell of fuel when plugs taken out.is there something in the fuel section to check.did carbs with ice cream sticks. All good. If l set points on L and R does that make any difference.

The timing marks on Suzuki two strokes varies by model & is 20 to 24 degrees before top dead center.

Did you make sure that manually operating the left points gives you a spark at the left plug?

Do you get good fuel flow with the petcock on prime?

Look in the carb inlet. How much of a gap is there between the carb body & the top of the slide cutout?

It’s been my experience that if you fussed for a while trying to start these old two strokes, the bike gets harder to start.
With plugs out & ignition off — kick start the bike a bunch of times.
Let it sit for a while & then put plugs in. (I cover plug holes with a shop towel just in case…)
Prime the carbs for 1/4 minute or so.
Choke on, no throttle & ignition off — 3 hard kicks.
Choke on, no throttle & ignition on — kick as hard as you can. (I kick lightly just a bit to engage the kickstart pawl & then go for it.)
BAS (Bike Acquisition Syndrome) - too many bikes but have room for more

Nice one Alan  .

I would think the first thing to do regarding the smoke is to take the bike for a decent run and clear the cases of any residual oil (i.e. give it a good thrash :D ).

Got the spark to coincide with tdc.got it running and idling without air cleaner on but will only start after lots of kicks if l squirt fuel into carb mouth when cold.both sides smoke evenly. A wee way away from test drive.starts when hot but if l leave it for 15 minutes not starting.another small problem, clutch wont engage, hopefully l haven't assembled something wrong.

It should spark just before (20 degrees) it reaches TDC _ use the kickstart to gently rotate the motor(crank-shaft) with the plugs out. Sparking at TDC is always a good starting point (pun!) as most engines will run at this setting just not optimally.

Can you see the clutch pushrod moving when you pull the lever? Plates could be stuck but even on my 250 which was stood for 15-20 years the clutch was remarkably OK!

Took the clutch basket off to double check things. With engine cover off tried clutch and all the plates moved together. Checked pawls, spindle, etc.tried clutch, all plates moved.put on stand and put in first gear, clutch in or out back wheel didn't turn freely. Might be for sale soon.if l sit on it in gear should it turn over without back wheel moving.
