Re: Timing -- Lost
I FOUND IT! I FOUND IT! One of the 3 leads in the harness decided to lean itself against the ground strap. Yes, the right lead was grounded. DOH! Works much gooder now.

Re: Timing -- Lost
Good catch!
That's a strange one, and not obvious either.

Re: Timing -- Lost
The usual short is that the points wire is contacting earth through the points even when open. I'd remove the points lead and condenser lead from the annoying cylinder and use a continuity meter on the moving point to show it does break when open. Then reattach each lead in turn and check its still behaving (you may need to disconnect the bullet to the coils, near the airbox).
It must be something simple. Don't give up!

Good find! just seen your latest post
You woulda found it by my suggested method which involved disconnecting that loom bullet, but I'd not have guessed why you'd have found it!

Re: Timing -- Lost
Gotta remember my bike is not together yet. These bullets are open because the harness isn't on yet. It was right here.

Re: Timing -- Lost
If the points rubbing block that rides on the cam is worn down it will throw everything off , you will be forced to adjust the gap to make up for the worn blocks ( if thats what it is ) in order to still be in the points plate adjustment slots . I have also read of aftermarket points being short on the rubbing blocks also creating the same problem .
the older i get the faster i was

Re: Timing -- Lost
I've read the same about varying lengths of rubbing-block, but I recently fitted new points (one genuine Denso, the other two were aftermarket Daichi) and had no problems setting gap and timing.Suzukidave wrote:If the points rubbing block that rides on the cam is worn down it will throw everything off , you will be forced to adjust the gap to make up for the worn blocks ( if thats what it is ) in order to still be in the points plate adjustment slots . Re: Timing -- Lost
Leaky condenser? bad one could create a flow of current across the point even when they are open.
Remove the holding screw and pull the can out so not touching anywhere would isolate it as a quick test, saves disturbing the lead to the points.

Re: Timing -- Lost
I got it timed OK. Most settings are very near their limits though. I replaced the cam because the original was slightly pitted. That with the lack of lube has probably worn down the phenolic heels on the points. They might set one more time but that's about it. I do have an aftermarket set I can use if it comes to that. The kit is made by NipponDenso, but they are kokusan points. Also has 3 new condensers and 3 spark plugs .I can't use the plugs as they are for the earlier motors. ND part number W22ES. New in wrapped boxes. Anybody need them?
