T20 correct gearbox assembly
Does it make any difference what the location is of the shifter cam on reassembly? I have the 2 shafts in place but on a dry run (poured some oil on gears and cam) I seem to be having a hard time getting through all 6 gears. I clamped the top case on with a couple bolts when trying it so I can't see what's going on in there. Also, doesn't there need to be a way of tensioning the shifting shaft? If so, How? Thanks, Doug

The tranny should be assembled in NEUTRAL. This is the default for all Japanese bikes. Soooooo...the shift drum should be in neutral, too.
The shift shaft SHOULD have a return spring on it.....probably on the right side just outboard of the cases but inboard of the end of the shaft.
It has been soooo long since I've had one of those apart......

If you have everything assembled correctly then, yes, it's in neutral.
One very easy way to tell if the shift drum is in neutral is to look for the neutral detent in the drum to align with the hole where the neutral detent pin and spring are normally installed. It's underneath, of course, so it helps if the engine is blocked up 3 or 4 inches above your bench. A small telescoping type mirror with a strong light also helps.
