It’s points and coil. Yes you need a charged battery
Thanks. I started working on mine last week. Installed the rebuilt carbs and started checking for spark. I thought “No way this old thing has points”. I will stop kicking now until I get a battery in place. LOL :roll:

The points are behind the left side cover. They are mounted to the starter/ generator unit.
