GT750 Oil Change Help

Post by simmons1 »

I am changing the transmission oil for the first time on the GT750 I bought from Wayne last year and I have a couple of dumb questions. The two old service manuals I have don't really give good instructions.

Towards the back of the engine there are two plugs one that angles towards the back of the bike and one that screws straight in to the bottom of the case.

I figured the one I needed to remove was the angled one. About a quart and half of oil drained out. The plug had a spring in it and when I was pouring the oil into my recycle jug I found another part in the bottom of the pan.

Is this what is supposed to be here? And are there any instructions for how I should put this back together? Also since I only got about 1.5 quarts out, am I supposed remove the other plug that screw straight in to the case?

Thanks for the help!

Yes. It's the other plug. What you removed is the transmission neutral detent spring. DON'T MOVE ANYTHING!!!. Put it back in. Pin first then the bolt with spring. You haven't hurt anything.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

Hi,that bolt & it's parts is the neutral detent bolt, you are not the first to take this out to drain the gearbox oil ! simply put it back in & undo the bolt that faces straight down  With oil changes,I measure the oil in & out (2200cc)..I don't rely on the gearbox level screw hole for oil to dribble out when full, but that's just me  important to keep fresh oil in the box,I change mine every 5,000 kms,& use Castrol MTX,a gear oil designed for use in 2 stroke gearboxes, but the motor oil recommend in the manual is fine

Thanks for the help! I removed the real drain plug and another quart came out. LOL

All is good even with pulling the wrong plug as it was dripping a little oil, so it got a new crush washer along with the oil plug. Just got back from a spin. No Leaks now.

Carbs come back apart tomorrow morning. I removed the TCE 3-1 and installed a set of Higgspeeds last weekend. My first jetting ride seemed pretty close but a touch lean.

I started at:

47.5 pilot, 117.5 main, needle clip in bottom groove

Today:

I shimmed the needles and installed 120 mains.

Feels blubberly in the mid range now.

I think I'll pull the shims from under the needles tomorrow and go for another spin.

Thanks again for the help.

I know this is an older post but I was curious. Which end of the pin goes up into the transmission first, "A" or "B" ?

If you have had the straight one out that will be all the oil that was in there in the first place.
