didn't someone on here successfully ran a T500 without a battery
using a capacitor of sort.

Re: running without battery?
It is possible, I can't remember the name of the capacitor device though.
However, unless it's a race bike and you need to save every ounce you can, a good old lead-acid battery is best for the charging system, as wet lead-acid batteries are good at dealing with over-charging. They just lose some electrolyte, which is easily topped up.
Also if the charging system fails .... you can still ride for a couple of hours easily on total-loss electrics. I ran my 380 for years on total loss (the rotor windings failed) with a 9AH battery, and that was good for over 2 hours riding. As the 500 has one less coil to constantly energise, you should easily be able to ride for longer ...

Re: running without battery?
The best solution is to replace the stock rectifier & regulator with a modern rectifier/regulator, and use an AGM battery.

Re: running without battery?
whats wrong with the old one?
what difference would it make by fitting a modern?
everything is working. bought a motobatt(gel battery).
the one I have now is new but dont like acid batteries.

Re: running without battery?
The stock voltage regulator keeps the voltage below 16V. Stock batteries can tolerate that — it just boils off some of the water & you fill it back up.
16V is too high for modern sealed batteries. A good modern rectifier/regulator will keep max voltage in the 14.2 ~ 14.5V range. A modern rectifier/regulator is also more efficient. It produces less heat & generates around 8% more electrical output.
Your Motobatt is probably an AGM battery.

Re: running without battery?
Lead acid are cheaper and more toreant to 'abuse' in my experience at least. I had a Fazer with an alarm and each year it would drain a (gel) battery to zippo and it was 80 quid for a replacement. I bought an 'Optimate' but that didn't make much difference. Almost certainly poor maintenance of my part but it's put me off gel for life.

Re: running without battery?
spoke to Simon Craddock of suzuki spares.
he said that for some reason on the 'K' model you cant fit a combined reg/rec
because on this model suzuki did something to the wiring etc.
I'm baffled as to what suzuki did to changed this on the K??
but earlier and later models are ok but the k.
can anyone please explain as to why I cannot fit this type of unit(both in one unit)
thanks in advance.

as for gel batteries the motobatt is a more robust type of battery its not like others.

Sick of batteries that don't last? Try Motobatt
Advanced, Absorbed Glass Mat Technology, longer life. No initial charging, just install and go maintenance free, no messing around with acid.
20% more cold cranking amps, easy accessory connection with multi terminals designed for Motorcycles, boats and jetskis.
The Motobatt vented Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) battery features excellent high-current discharge performance, strong anti-attenuation ability, and long-lasting service life.
Gel electrolyte makes sure no acid leakage.
The VRLA battery will not be short circuit.
Produce battery with standard under automatic welding plates' technology.
12 Month warranty.

Re: running without battery?
This view might be related to the transition from the early design (the ignition switch has lights off & on positions), to the later design (the left handlebar switch controls the lights).johnakay wrote:spoke to Simon Craddock of suzuki spares.

Working around may just require a bit more ingenuity. If you send 100% of the alternator output directly to the rectifier/regulator, then this design variations won’t matter.
