Alternator brushes.
Hi all,
Has anybody else noticed that the price of a new set of Kokusan alternator brushes has doubled or even Quadrupled. The last set I bought I paid about £50 from Discount Bike Spares, ( no longer available ) but now prices are ranging from 290 euro's each at cmsl and £115 each at Robinsons Foundry. What on earth has happened, are they that hard to get hold of now. Just curious !
Regards,
Glyn.

Re: Alternator brushes.
Measure your rotor brushes and buy some off ebay (car alternator/starter brushes) that are slightly oversized, then rub them down on fine emery/wet'n'dry paper to the correct size. I paid £1.79 for a pair and 3500 miles on they're still working fine. Anyone paying genuine oem prices need their bumps feeling.
Of course the anoraks and rivet counters will be horrified, but do we give a sh.......?

Cheers Alan,
Sounds like a great idea, I don't suppose you can remember where you bought yours from.

Re: Alternator brushes.
Must be 3 years ago, so can't remember but just measure your brushes and get some slightly bigger, especially length or you'll be changing them regularly. Chances of finding some exact are slim I suppose. Most brushes are very similar in composition, basically being soft carbon with a copper 'tail'.
They run on copper or brass tracks which combined wirh the carbon, self lubricates and keeps wear down while making a good contact. Just ensure the tracks are smooth if you ever fit a second hand rotor.

Re: Alternator brushes.
Cheers Alan,
I've managed to find a set on ebay that are pretty close to the right dimensions, Valeo alternator brushes ABR5221 SVX72. Just need reducing in size a little and a couple of ring connectors fitting. Again great idea Alan and your help is much appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Glyn.

Re: Alternator brushes.
I too have a set of valeo brushes on their way to me thanks to this info. Thank you for this very useful post. It helps when someone else has already done the homework for me.

If anyone needs to save money without getting cheap crap in the process - ask a Yorkshireman.
(We give lessons to the Scots on economy!)
Why spend money unnecessarily - there's beer out there just waiting to be rehomed!

Cheers Alan,
This could be the reason I need all the advice I can get. I'm from Derbyshire, something about being strong in the arm and weak in the head.
