T500 Rebuild can I do it myself?

Post by RossB »

I'm back, need to do seals inside motor it's a smoke fest! It's got 10k on it but was sitting for 30 years
Would like to do it myself. I have been a tool maker for the last 30 years so I have everything you could imagine. The manual I have is ok it's a Clymer, don't mind having a pro do it but I learn nothing. Just go for it!?
Thanks

All the toolmakers, machinists, and journeymen mechanics I know have the talent and knowledge to do a twin crank. Is it easy? No. Should you do it? Sounds like it to me.

There's a guy in UK on http://www.kettleclinic.co.uk/kcforum/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; who rebuilt his own GT750 crank at home and the story ended well. I am but an amateur spanner twiddler with little kit so I've always farmed out cranks.

Hello Ross,

I just had a T500 crank rebuilt by Pete Odell. Helps if you have various jigs and fixtures of course.

You will certainly need a hydraulic press at the very least (and a big copper headed hammer for the final trueing :D )

I have been wondering this as well, specifically, does the crank have to be split to change the inner seals? I guess I will find out this coming weekend, because the cases are coming apart. But I would like to have an idea of what I am getting myself in for.

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob,

You do have to split the crank to replace the seals on the inner main bearing.

If they are worn out they will spin overly easy. They should have a nice light/ smooth drag . I took a tiny syringe with light oil and tried pushing oil into the bearing(through the small inlet port in bearing). Then I tried pulling a vacuum on the bearing/seals . Luckily my center bearing and seals were top notch and I only had to replace the outers.

Thanks just got it apart didn't attempt seal yet there is a sleeve that runs inside seal (clutch side) I can see little ring around that sleeve might reverse it when I assemble it. Going try your suggestion on getting seal out.I'm not going to bugger it up! Is the left side as easy to get to?
Thanks!
