Hard choice to make, need some advice

Post by Eddie »

Well, I have been looking for a small car to commute to work and back , like a Miata, I found one in nice shape for 4 grand, then I found a guy selling a 2014 cb1100 deluxe model, bigger gas tank, 6 speed tranny, it has 6,800 miles on it, we got to talking on the phone (he lives about 7 hours from me) and after a while he said he would sale me the cb1100 deluxe for 6 grand! nothing wrong with it at all and now im not sure what to do?,(the guy has other bikes and hes in his late 60's,he likes trail riding better) in my opinion this is a good price but I cant justify getting it, It makes more sense to get the car for work, (I carry a lot of stuff to work, and im outa town for days at a time) I just keep thinking about the bike, damn it!,,, anybody on here ride a cb1100? deluxe model? are they worth it? I have never had a fuel injected bike my newest is the 74 gt750 , most of my bikes are older than 74,,,,i have asked this on here before but that's before this jumped in my lap , 6 grand is a good price for a 2014 deluxe , I think,,,, how does it compare to a gt750?

if you plan to commute to work and there is a lot of traffic, people will be upset/angry with you if they have to get behind the GT750 due the exhaust fumes.

Use NADA to see Honda’s value. Honda makes good stuff . 6800 miles in one year is not low, I hope he did the service work.

Recently I also think about a Miata.... when thinking about a larger modern touring bike (comfy for two) many friends have these large touring bikes ... no interest. Get a Miata  . (very comfy for two.. almost same weight too  )… if one is inexpensive... so far nothing, everything higher then what KBB, Edmunds, Cars, NADA sys it should be$).. but season just starting here… should get lower.

Hmm Miata’s are slow. It's not about speed so much as the fun factor. But if Miata expensive having had 60s/70s us muscle cars in my younger day the new Mustang GT is very nice... so many choices these days.

I have 10 motorcycles, that I can and do ride a lot. I have 35 miles one way to work. Here, I choose hop in my little 2wd ranger truck with 220K miles now (28 mpg without trying) , buy a coffee, snack, turn on the radio, heater, AC, wipers as needed and drive. AMs are too damp, I hate to get all dressed up to ride and I hate to get caught in the rain and on very hot days on the open highway the sun is just too much.

There are always good deals on motorcycles. (At least, those that don't come from HD. )

You need a car. Buy a car. You already have a motorcycle.

I have a GL1800A Goldwing and my project GT750A and I have a 1994 Miata that I commute in daily in the warm season.
I have a lousy commute and to me I'd just rather drive than ride...also the bikes get filthy sitting in an industrial complex where i am forced to slave away daily. PLUS if it rains...

My NA Miata has 172K miles on it now and has only crapped out once (bad ignition module) in the 5 plus years I have had it. I drive 60+ miles round trip. It gets almost 30MPG, has heat, COLD A/C and a drop top (that goes up and down in less than 30 seconds) and is ALMOST as fun as a bike and I can drink my coffee. They are as reliable as a stone as long as you do the usual minimal maintenance.

I love those CB1100's too but i'd go with the Miata (of course you COULD buy them both...) :ssh:  :wth: :D

Thanks guys appreciate the responses, I was looking at a 2001 Miata with 134,000 miles on it, the guy wants $3,500 , the guy with the cb1100 deluxe wants 6,000 and its a 2014, I really like that bike or at least what it looks like, and they are not going to be selling them in the U.S. next year so this is the last year, the cb1100 deluxe goes any from 10,000 to 8,000 that I have seen and this guy wants 6,000 which to me is a good deal as far as price,,,,,,I have never even seen one where I live, but like what was said the Miata would be good for work, I just know later on im going to regret not getting the bike, and I doubt I can afford both, and I know for sure I cant justify both, The only bike that I ride is the gt750,,,I know sooner or later she will need a total rebuild and then I will be without a bike, that's the main reason for wanting the cb1100, while the gt750 is down ill have the cb1100,,,,,,but hopefully the old gt750 keeps running strong and she doesn't need a rebuild for a long time,,,,,I just rode her yesterday ....

Get the Miata. When it is time to overhaul the GT, get a small cheap bike to ride while working on the GT. When GT is done, sell little bike so total outlay of money is minimized all 'way round. You get to eat your cake and have it too.

well I decided to buy the cb1100, I can find a Miata anywhere, the cb1100 deluxe is very rare around here,, but when I called the guy he already sold it to a guy in California!!! he said he was sorry, and its my fault I dragged my feet not knowing what I should do, the guy waited a week for me! so its totally my fault, wish I would have got the bike :(

my daily driver was a 1966 chevy long bed truck, 283 sbc, I still have the truck but about 8 years ago I bought a 2004 z71 chevy truck, its my 1st vehicle to have power steering! air conditioner and power brakes! but its 4-wheel drive and is not that good on gas driving to work and back, I just wanted something small and good on gas and I have driven miatas before and even though guys say they are chick cars , they are fun as hell to drive,,,,the cb1100 wasn't practicable because when I go to work I take luggage with me, (1 medium suitcase and 1 large duty bag full of books for work) I am usually out of town a couple of days then home, that's why I didn't buy the cb1100 right of the bat, couldn't justify it as a commuter for work because of all the stuff I carry,,,,now im looking at another Miata 2001 for $3,200.00 if I get it ill keep you updated, just worried about changing the timing belt , water pump, and possible clutch in it, now the car costs more ,,,,,but still they are very reliable cars....

A Miata called slow...guess it's all relative. It's not a Stang GT but it will certainly outdo about any traffic situation you'll encounter, get you a speeding ticket anywhere, and will amaze you at how you can navigate obstacles. Motors are good for at least 200k. NA's are a non-interference engine, parts are plentiful.

an 01 for 3200?? you could drop several hundreds of $$ in what you list and will need a pretty good tool set to do that work. Remember, the cheapest car is not always the best value.
