Higgspeed chambers / side stand clearance 1972 GT550
I just recently installed a set of Higgspeed chambers on my GT550. They look and sound fantastic. I just had a chance to ride the bike and noticed when just going around a normal corner the side stand drags the ground. Riding a twisty road at this point would be or could be tragic!! I cant really see any way to gain a significant amount of clearance without possible major changes to stand or stand mount. Or pounding on the pipe to make a recessed area for the stand to fold up into.. I would think this would be a common problem for anyone with a GT550 or GT380 with chambers installed. One thing for sure, I sure do miss my center stand!!

I don't have Higgspeeds so I can't help with the side stand issue. But I have fitted various non-stock pipes to 750s and 550s and can tell you that with a cunning mod, you can usually retain a mainstand. The change I had made is to have the cross bar reshaped on the right side so that it loops forward (as seen when the stand is down). That way, when folded up, the stand 'cut out' goes around the centre chamber (works well with Piper 3:1 also) and folds right up, in fact slightly higher than with stock exhausts.
Obviously, its not a 5min job and in my case, unable to weld or braze at home, I got a local chap to do mine.
The good thing is you can still use the same stand with stock pipes, because the stops are located on the stand legs, so the cross bar change doesn't make any difference to the stand used with stock pipes.
Cheers,
Mike

That's a nice looking 750 you have there! I made some changes to my side stand so to get another inch of clearance. Should be good for my riding abilities now. I also made some changes to my main stand so I can use it for a maintenance stand which is just what I wanted. Nothing like being able to raise the back wheel off the ground for chain tightening and cleaning. So I feel all is good now..
