GT550 gauges

Post by bpeck27 »

Is there any way to restore the lenses on GT550 gauges? Mine are so yellowed that I can barely see through them.

Yes. You can either wet sand / polish the lenses. Or best option is to cut them out and install a concave pieces of glass the correct size. There's no need to glue, etc. the new pieces of glass if you buy the correct diameter and it rests on the perimeter of the shell. Once you tighten the case over it. It will never move and looks much better, had you glued it etc. Takes a couple hours of your time to dremel out the old lenses if you want it to look good. Otherwise, it's very easy to do. Just be carefull not to bump the face plates. They scratch very easily.

You can turn this

I takes about 2 hours and several grades of sopping wet paper. Start with 600 and work till it's uniform in texture. Then go to 800, 1000, 1500 and finish with 2000. Each time you change grades tou need to sand out the previous grade, making it uniform each time. This is all done by hand. Do not use power equipment or you will melt the plastic. Just semi-firm pressure with your palm Change the water with each grade so as not to pull in any grit from the grade you just finished with. Keep it very wet and don't try to rush it. Your results will be the same as above. One thing I did do at the end was use plastic and plexiglass scratch remover. Got it from autozone, but most auto stores carry it.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

Thanks guys. I spent the afternoon wet sanding my gauge faces. What an improvement! The lenses are so clear now that I can see the cobwebs wrapped around the speedometer needle.
