RPM rise when clutch disengaged

Post by Ruton »

The issue began after I changed the clutch cable, before this it was working fine. I have tried adjusting the clutch at the screw end on the motor and at the lever and it works fine for a while. Sometimes though and completely randomly while riding, when I try to disengage the clutch to shift, the rpm's just keep rising, same thing happens if the bike is in neutral. When it happens, I shut off the motor and pull over to the side of the road and wait, after a while it will "unstick" and everything will go back to normal. Keep in mind, I am not giving it any throttle when this is happening. Would this have anything to do with the clutch? I understand there is a clutch pushrod, is there a way to adjust this? When I shift into first and second it is sort of clunky going in gear, is this normal for the bike?

It isn't a clutch issue. Could be one of the carb slides is stuck. Check that the cables aren't jamming around the top of the carbs. There should be no sharp bends in the cables. Otherwise pull the carbies out and make sure they are all to factory specs.

I've had similar problems and it turned out to be a bent (damaged) throttle cable on both of the carbies.
