cylinder height

Post by Coyote »

Most of us (including me) have no way of determining the assembled variation in the cylinder heights on the 380 and 550. I do however own outside micrometers through 6". This morning while sipping my coffee and staring at the cylinders on the floor, I decided the check each one in their current state of non-assembly. Just to see how close they are together. So I checked all 3 in the same location - rear straddling the intake port (no port 'windows' in the way). Here are the results:
Left 4.179
Center 4.177
Right 4.180
That's a total variation of only .003. Close enough in anybody's book. It surprised me to find the center being the shortest. All this proves nothing and I did it just because I have the means. Interesting though. When the head goes back on (a ways down the line), I can see I need to torque the center first.
I'm not certain but I believe Suzuki allowed up to .010 variation. Might have been their factory tolerance. .25 mm (.0098)
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.
