The Gt750 front end is the usual route....which also maintains some of the bike's 70's authenticity. You still wont achieve startling brake power with these old disks and calipers, compared to modern kit. Don't entirely dismiss the stock drum, from experience I can tell you that correctly set up with the right shoes, it can be surprisingly good.

Ferodo green linings make a helluva difference, but set up right as TP says, is the way to go.
Think of how stupid the average person is, then realise that half of them are more stupid than that.

Another option is a dual drum (4LS) from a 72 GT550 or GT750.
Some setups swap out the front end while others adapt the drum for use with T500 forks.
Looks more correct but the 4LS brakes are pricey.

Re: Fork conversion to dual disc??
As Alan said, Ferodo green linings are very good when bedded in and well set up. I bought a 500 race bike with them fitted in the 70's, and would out stop my mate's GS750 no problem....

Re: Fork conversion to dual disc??
Twin disks are the way to go but fit decent pads or even better modern disks and calipers.
Green linings have no place IMHO on a street bike. They have huge levels of friction at high temps but are really grabby when cold.
And the stock 500 drum looks so good with all those cross drilled holes but tends to crack and when used hard cracks even worse.
GT550/750 drum is OK but is incredibly heavy. With decent linings (eg 2520) they can be made to work well and they look good too.
