Anyone ever see tool that punches holes in gasket material ?
You know similar to a paper hole puncher that maybe has adjustments or different attachments that would allow you to punch perfectly different size holes in gasket sheets ? I'd really like a tool like that. Never seen or heard of one for that matter. This would come in real handy. Some holes for bolts you can cut out with an exacto knife and it accomplishes the job perfectly fine as those type of holes do not need to be perfect. But, wouldn't it be nice to have a type of tool that would allow you to make your own carb bowl gaskets for example. With these type of gaskets your would need perfectly cut and sized holes for the jets, etc. There other types of gaskets that this type of tool would be fantastic for. That's just an example. It's at total rip off to pay $40 dollars for 3 little bowl gaskets that would be a breeze to make if you had a tool like this. Just maybe, I lost out on the chance of being rich had I not shared this idea ?

Its a great question. I've not seen something specifically for this, but I'd guess a leather worker would own a set of tools that would permit making perfectly circular holes in thin leather and that would do the job...like a precision cork-borer tube style toolset.

I think what you'd need is a paper drill

You might want to google a hole punch set. I have 2 sets. 3/32 thru 3/8 (6 punches) and 3/8 thru 3/4 also 6 pinches. These are Chinese made by Amtos. Good hard steel and perfectly round. Just be sure to back it up with something hard. I use scrap pieces of oak. How about these?

Some good ideas. But, doesn't these type of punch tools leave gasket material around the edges of the new hole ? On the backside ? I assume once using a similar punch tool. You would still have to cut away that portion and the hole would not be perfect as needed for a carb bowl gasket for example.

Use a razor blade to trim the hole after punching

As far as the hole punch pliers i can say it leaves a nice clean hole , the largest hole size isnt that big but it works great for bowl gasket sized screw holes . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0w8LUArhIM8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;pearljam724 wrote:Some good ideas. You've sold me on it. That is impressive and holes are clean according to that other product in the vid. Exactly what I was looking for. I'll buy the Harbor Freight one in hopes it cuts as clean of holes as the one posted in your video link.Suzukidave wrote:As far as the hole punch pliers i can say it leaves a nice clean hole , the largest hole size isnt that big but it works great for bowl gasket sized screw holes . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0w8LUArhIM8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;pearljam724 wrote:Some good ideas. Sounds odd but I use biopsy punches. Lots of different sizes. They're really cheap on eBay

I've got some hole punches that are over 50 years old as well as newer ones and they leave very clean holes in materials such as gasket paper, plastic sheet and brass shim paper.
You need to research the type you need, one set such as this well worth the money. 3mm to 30mm sizes

Mine are made somewhat differently. No interchangeable tips, rather 12 individual punches. These cost me about $20 -- that many years ago.

It has been said that one cannot have too many tools, just not enough jobs
)
I now have a strong desire for a set of these. I'll then work out a use for them....
Cheers,
Mike

Re: Anyone ever see tool that punches holes in gasket materi
Error. A total of 13 punches. Not 12. But the 3/8 is duplicated in both sets, so I might as well call it 12.
I have this thin rubber if anyone would like to make some reusable gaskets. It's actually fish pond liner. I have tested it with gasoline, oil, acetone, lacquer thinner and alcohol. It is impervious to all those. I have made several clutch cover gaskets out of it and works great. It doesn't swell like normal rubber does. Average thickness is 1mm (.040). Any reasonable amount free to anyone. You just pay for packaging and shipping. I'm too easy.
