Gas Cap Vent

Post by Coyote »

A fellow board member left his gas cap on when he lined the yank with POR-15. He got it all over the cap and it will no longer vent. Bike dies shortly after closing the cap I'm just wondering if a tiny hole was drilled in the area depicted in the photo if that would accomplish the same thing?

I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

Quite possibly that would do the job, but you may not have to go quite so far. Can you not clear the little breather channels in the cap using something caustic and a piece of wire? See in the picture the little lines radiating from circle? After injecting a small amount of caustic soda solution using a syringe (readily available at any pharmacy) and leaving to soak for a while, poke some wire in there and try to clear the obstruction. Then rinse well with water and if you have one, blow the holes through with a high pressure airline. Then hopefully you won't have caused yourself any trouble with fuel leaking out of the cap, which could happen if you go drilling holes. Just be careful to use proper safety precautions. Goggles, gloves etc. and keep it away from paintwork. DO NOT soak the whole filler cap in caustic soda, it will damage the shiny bits. If you splash any on the shiny chrome or on paintwork wipe off immediately with a damp cloth and then wipe dry with another clean cloth.

Yes I know I'm probably teaching Grandma to suck eggs, but I only mention the safety stuff on the offchance you didn't already know and I would hate you to harm yourself or your mate's bike.
Good Luck
Tom
