I checked a pair here and one (probably early model) has a bolt into the top of the stem where later ones have a top hat nut and longer threaded stem.

So I looked at parts lists, J and K were different to each other and used that top bolt. The K top triple is the same as L/M

Lower Upper
J 51410-31001 51311-31000-019
K 51410-34000 51311-31700-019
L/M 51410-31700 51311-31700-019

Ian Sandy's Old Japanese bikes page says that J models were 10mm wider than the rest and that might explain things. So
J top and bottom are wider than others. K on had the same narrow top clamp but K had the bolt in top of the stem where L on were threaded at the top.

So now I have to go and measure mine and see what I've got.

Well thanks for that information. What my idea was to put a twin disc Yamaha Xj 900 front forks on my t500 . First problem I came across was the steering stem is to fat to go through the frame. So that’s going through my mind now is use a gt750 triple tree enlarge the holes where the forks slide in and use a gt front twin disc wheel . I now think this is a poorly thought out idea on my part maybe I could remove the steering stem from the xj and machine it to size . What do you think am I going in the wrong direction. The xj 900 forks cost me $100 au

All Balls Racing has a fork conversion tool that list the bearings needed to use a complete front end from one bike with a different frame.
Select your T500 & it then lists the bearings needed for an XJ900 triple tree.
https://www.allballsracing.com/index.php/forkconversion

The tool makes no consideration for the compatibility of the steering stem length. You need to make your own measurements & go from there.

The steering stem is to thick to go through the t500 frame . I would give up on the Yamaha forks but they look like they are in reasonable condition .

Just out of idle curiosity, can you press out the Yamaha stem and get it either machined to the same dimensions as the 500 or get a new one made to those dimensions and press that in?

Went to a machine shop yesterday and in his opinion the Yamaha stem is not enough thickness to machine down. Trying to grind out the weld in the Yamaha stem but it is proving to be very uncooperative. I may go back to the gt 750 idea

With a stock steel stem that is often the case. Your machine shop guy should be able to chuck it up and machine off the weld and press out the old Yamaha stem - or even better leave it in and machine it out to act as an adapter. Cut it off above the triple clamp and then machine the weld off the Suzuki one, press it into what's left of the Yamaha triple clamp and weld it all together.

Some times the stem is swaged into position with a slug forced into the lower end. If that's the case, the process is the same in principle but may require a little more machining or a lot more swearing.

thanks for your advice I talked to a machine shop today and he said he will make a new stem a copy of the t500 but the top of the stem like the xj900 but I have to wait 3 weeks before he can get to it

Take a look at the height differences between the stock ball bearings & tapered roller bearings. You might find that its useful to deviate a bit from the stock T500 stem-length dimensions.

Have no experience with the bearings so I will buy them now . When he makes the stem I am giving him the frame . Thanks I appreciate your help
