Hi all, I am in the UK and in the market for either a T500 or a GT500 and would prefer a project........got it in my head to do something like we would have done back in the day - a bit of a "hotrod", a little mild tuning, paint job, expansion chambers etc etc.
Anything out there....???

Re: Wanted - T500 or GT500
Sorry for the late reply not visited this section in a while.
How big a project? Having just sold my 1970 T500 I have been going through the left overs and reckon I have ~90% of a bike. Total basket case, and I mean TOTAL! The obvious stuff missing is the chain guard, oil tank, side panel and battery box. Some bit have been restored already most not. No V5 or registration docs you would need to apply for a age related number. The frame I have and crankcases are numbered for a 75.
Best bit is the heads I have are Barton aftermarket squish band heads and a pair of stock size barrel ripe for porting, spannies, for a hot rod motor
I might be tempted to sell, otherwise I was going to put it together as is and get it registered.

Hi akendall1966,
I race a T500 and I would be interested in those Barton centre plug heads if they might be for sale. I have a good pair of Std. heads if you might want to trade.
Cheers Geoff

Appreciate the heads would be of interest. But, I don't have the appetite for another restoration like the MKIII, so If the pile of bits stays it would be to ultimately make a special of some sorts. So a hopped up motor would be de rigueur.
I'll bear you in mind if I should decided to sell them on.
Cheers

Hi Adrian,
Thanks
Centre Plug/Squish heads are not instant bolt on horse power, but they do then allow you make other tuning mods over and above what you can do with Std. heads.
Cheers Geoff

Hi Geoff,
Exactly, the engine needs a total rebuild so some porting / pistons / exhaust are all options too. The ignatech programmable ignition conversion I put on the MkIII while OTT on that bike will likely reappear again on this one

Hi AK,
I have both PowerDynamo (PD) and Horse Power International (HPI) race ignitions. The HPI is digital and fully programmable, the PD is more basic and works just as well at half the price
. Both of these ignitions come in road versions with charging/lighting coils.
Cheers Geoff

Re: Wanted - T500 or GT500
Hi Geoff,
Interesting, I used the Sparker TCI unit from ignatech so I could retain the original ignition coils. With adapter plates, the pick up coils dropped in where the points had been. I used 2 pick up coils so I could time each cylinder independently, but believe the system has the facility to offset using only one coil. That kept the original alternator but I rewired it to full time output of all coils through a modern 3 phase rec/reg.
Could be reverted to points with a small wiring change if originality was desired.

Re: Wanted - T500 or GT500
Hi AK,
When I was looking for a self generating race ignition I passed on the Ignitech because of the need to mount your own pick-up coils.
The PD system has a duel output coil, so each cylinder has the same timing.
The HPI is fully programmable and each cylinder can be set-up independently via a Laptop.
Cheers Geoff
