Back in 1997 I went to the Oliver's Mount circuit in Scarborough for a classic race meeting, and Team Obsolete was there with its MVs and the 250cc six.

When the time came for Jim Redman to do a demonstration lap on the six, the buzz of excitement around the circuit was palpable. We could hear the machine barking like a hound from hell on the grid as Redman warmed it up, then the sound hardened into a wail as he left the line.

All eyes were locked on him as he rounded the hairpin and screwed it on up the hill, ripping through the gears second ...... third ...... fourth ....... as quickly as that. Everyone's head swivelled to follow the bike as it howled past them and disappeared over the brow of the hill.

Then everyone turned, utterly dumbstruck and looked at each other, shaking their heads in disbelief.

No recording can convey just how primal and LOUD the noise from the six is. You don't just hear the noise, it's a physical force that destablises you. If you've ever been at an airshow and seen an F4 Phantom take off with full reheat, stand on its tail and just go vertical, it's like that. It makes you think, how did man make something like that?

I saw Hailwood on it back in 1968 at Oulton Park - WOW!
Bill Ivy was there too, and IIRC, Read was a no-show.
I've still got the programme, I'll have to dig it out and post a copy.

Absolutely awesome......
Honda celebrated 50 years of TT racing...I think it was in 07, and they sent all manner of old kit like the 6 and other assorted unsilenced race machinery along Douglas prom every night. It was a real experience to see them, and made us wish we could travel through time to witness them being used in anger.
It makes me think....what will people be looking back at with the same enthusiasm and awe, in another 40 years?

 I saw/heard the six at the Isle Of Man in 1989,what a machine!!! The world has changed, & I don't think we will see such exotic racing machinery again from any manufacturer unfortunately, even though they have the technology to "pull a rabbit out of a hat" 8) PS,Alan we have Phill Read here in Sydney in March for the Barry Sheene Festival of Speed.....no I idea what he will be riding..Yamaha ? probably just parade laps in between real racing !! 8)
Cheers,
Roger.

Roger, can you ask Phil what TR750 he rode in the seventies. I have seen references to an Ex Phil Reed TR750 but no evidence and no idea what year and which model or what frame it was in.

So when you are buying him drinks after the races, please find out.

:)
