Sunday Drive

The air was unusually clear, so I decided it was a good day to burn a bit of injector oil today

I'm still sorting out the GT500 I rebuilt, but it is getting close and I have to say I do like the way it rides - very much like a GT550 and so much lighter in the handling than any of my GT750's. Less vibration than I expected - and nothing large fell off so overall I'd call it a success. I burned a tank of fuel - not sure how far I went - turns out the speedo only reads as high as 100kph and the tach only to 4000rpm so I will have to get them sorted, plus a couple of other small things.
May have to go out again when my knees recover.

Glad to see the project is taking shape and you are getting some riding in. I am sooooo jealous, the weather is beyond miserable down here and we had to miss our monthly rideout due to the bloody rain. Go for a nice long ride for me please Ian - vicarious enjoyment is all I'll be getting for a few months yet

Sounds like you are enjoying the 500 Ian, well good for you, I hope the weather holds as its been doing.

Just a little info, on my GT500 I am getting about 43mpg in town, so that can give you a 'ball park' range to expect. Mine gets vibey about 2500 rpm-3000 the seems to smooth out some.

Allan/Mike - weather is great at the moment - just the usual occasional hellacious thunderstorm with hail or a tornado to consider.
Robert - that would be US gallons right ? So that would be about 51 MPG in real gallons eh ?

That's good to know - I'll have to check. I know my GT750 gets about 43 MPG which would be about 36 MPG US I think.

Did I understand you right? The tach only reads to 4000 rpm or you could not go faster than 4000 rpm?

Yep - both the tach and speed are fubared. While they will occasionally read higher, they drop back to lower readings and sit there regardless of what else is actually happening.

I'm sure it can be fixed by just spending more money

I hear there is a chap in Barbados who can do a little voodoo on improperly function forward motion and rotational measuring devices and make work and look better than new. Catching him may be a problem as he seems to hide out in at least three places on the northern anerican continent..... This may turn into a mission of danger , should you accept it. Of course the members of this board would have to disavow any knowledge of your membership should anything go wrong with the transaction......

Actually - as we 'speak', that Barbados chap is trying to get the alternator on his bandit working again after he tried to fix it in my storage lock-up

I understand H2Rick got him sorted out so presumably all is well again ................

Well actually I was changing the airbox assembly on that Bandit out as the PO decided to damage the sealing section of the airbox cases, so a second one was called up for duty from Ebay.
To remove the airbox called for carbs and alternator removal for clearance, and the nut and washer for the alternator drive gear were missing when I removed it.
Rick and I could not locate new ones in Calgary so we went to the local shop in town where he works and got a used set, which we then installed onto the alternator.
It was fixed in a few hours and so the BC tour of 2012 was done using the Bandit, and loads of photos and videos were taken which I plan to set up shortly for viewing.
Now the sump pan has to come off next summer when I return as I suspect the old parts may be down in there.
