Clutch Adjustment and feel

I have a 1975 GT750M and have just replaced the clutch plates, springs and clutch cable with no problems at all after I sourced the parts from GT Reiner. I followed the cable adjustment instructions and have the correct amount of free play in the cable. This my first GT750, therefore I do not know what the clutch should feel like compared to other bikes I have had.

The clutch lever certainly is not light to use and you certainly need a strong grip. When changing gear, you notice the mechanical feel and sound of the gearbox as it does not feel smooth. Also, when starting from cold, the rear wheel spins when on the centre stand, however you can stop the wheel from spinning with your boot with no great resistance. Should the clutch cable be adjusted out further when on the centre stand to stop this and to also improve the feel of the clutch and gear changing etc, or is all this normal for a GT750? Any suggestions on this would be appreciated - Cheers Syd.

What oil are you using in the trans.?? Thick oil will cause the clutch to drag when cold.

Thanks for your comments, I have used Valvoline HP GL-5 rated Gear Oil 80W/90 which is not a synthetic oil.

the rear wheel will turn no matter how the clutch is adjusted. it is 100% normal for it to do that.

One thing I have found to smooth things out is to pre-load the shift lever with your toe before actually shift.

Lubing the clutch cable and making sure the bends in the cable are large as possible can help a bit with the clutch pull . Did you soak the clutch fiber plates in oil before you installed them ?

Thanks for your note - will recheck cable lube side. Also, I did not soak the plates prior to fitting. Just wondering if I should trying adjust clutch further by a couple of additional turns out on the cable adjuster?

Its best to follow the book on the adjustments . Slacken the cable and adjust the clutch first on the side of the engine for proper free play and then adjust the cable http://www.oldjapanesebikes.com/mraxl_G ... /sr36.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hi Syd,

Nice to see your bike out on the run today. You have done a beautiful job on her and she seems to run sweet as. How about posting a few pics so everyone can see the great job you have done on the bike?
Look forward to see the GT out on more group runs.

Mike
