computer fans too noisy?

I searched for this a loooooong time. There is a very simple fix. Tools required are a small jewelers flat head screwdriver. This applies to 4 pin fans.
You need to swap some wires around on the molex connector that the fan plugs in to.
Standard molex connector is Y,B,B,R. Using the screwdriver (computer off), release the red wire and a black wire by bending the tabs down inside the molex connector. Re arrange the wires to Y,R,B,B. Bend the tabs back up before re installing in to the molex connector. Your fan will now run on 6.97 volts as opposed to the 12 volts it was running on. This reduces the fan rotational speed by about 40 - 45% and makes them nice and quiet while still moving enough air.

Great tip, Coyote.
Fortunately for me, my old HP has what seems to be a 3 speed fan...and most of the time it runs on the slowest speed. Something to do with the climate in the Great White North maybe ?? Or maybe I don't work the old girl hard enough ??

Excellent research Chris.

First the computer fan.

Next the neighborhood dogs.
