Last weekend I was having a debate about 2-strokes vs. 4-strokes with my dirt biking buddies and told my good friend that if you stroke it more than twice you're just playing with it (I think I heard that from someone on here). Well I had barely finished saying it when he said that must mean I'm just a two pump chump. I didn't know what to say so just took the verbal beating of my life. As Kelso would say, I got burned!!!
It's ironic that when we all started riding together about 15 years ago I was the only one on a 4-stroke ('84 XR200) and they all had 2-strokes and now I have 7 2-strokes and they all ride 4-strokes. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has any good ammunition I could use in my next debate so I can regain some dignity.
It's like the old debate of Jap bikes versus Brit/USA iron - if it wasn't for the pressure from the Japs then the Brits and US would still be selling leaking unreliable crap.
Two stroke competition motors have way more power than four strokes but with legislation killing off two strokes for the street then four stroke competition bikes had to be the goer. Race on Sunday sell on Monday. People have forgotten how powerful the GP 500 bikes were.
There isn't a quick comeback that can be used in polite company, however you could (close your eyes to imagine this) just stand there and with a slow thrusting of the hips say "two strokes yeah, but POWER on every stroke"
Better than a 4 stroke joke. Or 4 stroke, then choke. Or you could use the standard "Yer mutha wears army boots"

250Gp were replaced with Moto2 and Moto2 lap times are still slower than 250GP at most tracks.
You can build a 500cc twin today that makes over 135HP. It takes 750cc of 4 stroke to equal that.
2 stokes fire once per revolution versus once every 2 revs on a 4 stroke. Even a relatively inefficient 2 stroke will make more power than the equivalent sized 4 stroke. In terms of power form a certain size motor, 2 strokes will come out on top most of the time.
2 strokes were dropped because it was harder at that time to meet emission standards. A modern DFI two stroke can meet Euro4 standards. Of course our old bikes would come close to meeting any emission standard but that's a whole 'nother story.

Well put. That ain't exhaust smoke, it is low level cloud...
A big thanks to everybody for the great ideas! Especially: "two strokes yeah, but POWER on every stroke". Love it! Maybe now I can actually come up out of my basement where I barricaded myself away from the world and have been surviving on a bottle of Jack and a half eaten box of crackers I found under the stairs.
As far as 2-stroke dirt bikes, yeah, they have all but been extinct by modern rules and regulations. With motocross racing, at least in the US, in the early 2000's the AMA changed the rules to allow 4-strokes of double the displacement to race along side 2-strokes (125 = 250f, 250 = 450f). Both bikes have roughly the same horsepower, but with the much wider powerband of a 4-stroke, no one could ride 2-strokes competitively anymore. I mostly just ride for fun now and the old 2-strokes are much easier to work so I'm still riding them.
