I leave for a few hours to press some bearings off of a T500 crank and clean up some parts and I come back to find not one, but three spammers have gotten in and posted nonsense.

why not Allan have then verified by you and other forum administrators before they can post.
when I've joined other forums this what they do.
they send you a legitimate email and you send them the notice on how join.
not sure if you already do this.just a thought.

Thats very easy for a spammer to automate John - you can do the replies via software so the email idea doesn't necessarily do too much. Adding a 'captcha' to the post process can help - but that won't stop the spammers able to bypass the sign-up process completely. Thats why new versions of the board software are constantly being released - to plug the little security holes the hackers keep finding. :?
