Specialist insurers Footman James are warning classic riders of a new ruling from the Department for Transport that could lead to fines and penalty points should you let your cover lapse. The DfT's Continuous Insurance ruling becomes law in January 2011 and is designed to clamp down on uninsured road users. The concern for classic owners is that the ruling makes it an offence to own a vehicle without having a valid UK motor insurance, including when the vehicle is off road for repair or restoration. If you have taken out Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) for your bike, you don't need insurance. But, if your bike is registered, taxed and MoT'd and you've let the insurance lapse because the bike is tucked up in the garage, you could be fined. The scheme will compare DVLA data on registered keepers with the Motor Insurance Bureau database, so will not have to rely on police checks.

If I tag my bike I need insurance, if I let the insurance lapse then the insurance company lets the state know that I have let my insurance lapse and then they can suspend my lisence and I could be arrested. Each state is different as in Florida where I used to live you only have to have insurance if you do not wear a helmet. If you wear a helmet in Florida than it is okay to not have insurance but you do need a valid Motorcycle liscense

In Oklahoma, you have to have proof of insurance to get tags. Registration is required yearly on the same month, insured or not. If your bike is dowm, you can sign a waiver for the insurance and that gets you a black tag sticker which is not legal for use. When the time comes to put the bike on the road, it's back to the DMV with proof of insurance. Then you geat a legal sticker for the current year. Each year when registration time comes, you must have POI if you intend to continue using the bike. Both my bikes are due this month. Registration is $25 each.
The only helmet law here is passenger must wear one, however I have never seen that enforced. All the HD posers and their bag ladies never wear helmets but the police don't care.
