Yesterday, It was time for the 6 month checkup on the Nissan Versa I bought new last April. It's got a whopping 1600 miles on it!. So the check in girl is trying to get me to buy the "new improved' oil change as opposed to the regular oil change. She goes on to tell me that over time, acid builds up in the engine and starts eating itself up. This new oil not only prevents that but you only have to change the oil every 5000 miles instead of 3000 miles. So I asked if the oil we have been using for 100 years is no longer up to the task? I think I embarrassed her. Needless to say, I opted for a normal oil change.

Actually it's correct. Acid is a by product of combustion and always has been. Different fuels have been formulated with different mixes of ingredients over the years, but they have always been nasty. Acid is not a major concern in engine wear though. It's getting rid of particles of metal and carbon which are abrasive and that's why they fit a filter.

Next time I'd ask her what the new oil is by name so you can compare it to the old style oil they use. They may be using a synthetic or better oil or it could just be profit margin

I heard GM is going to a new oil that will be required, and longer oil change intervals.

I'm going back Wednesday for a free door ding removal. I'll get the name of the product then and post it up.
Any of you guys believe in Slick 50? I put it my Mopar 340 powered 31 Model A and noticed no difference at all. On the flip side I put a quart of it in my late 80's Toyota Tercel and picked up nearly 4 MPG.

I don't believe I read it hurts anything but any help has been negligible. This doesn't mean not use it but I haven't read where it helps much if at all. I think Duralube had better results, this has been some time since I have seen reports and studies about these lubes. If all else fails and I had a reason to try it again I would.

Well, I just came home from the Nissan dealership. It's simply called BG Protection Plan. Go there and click on 'products' at the bottom of the opening page. MOA is what they use.

I thought Slik 50 had disappeared. IIRC, all the tests done years ago showed zero change after it was added.

What about STP? Where did that go? For years we added it to our cars and bikes and had teh stickers, but it seems to be another product that was unnecessary.

We actually use STP oil treatment at work where we mix it with a hi-temp grease we use in downhole well testing tools. It's only purpose in this aplication is to make the grease "thinner" and more easy to apply on certain componenets.

considering nissan's less than stellar history of short oil ring life i wonder if the bg treatment is a stopgap to get them through the warranty period. it still seems unlikely a manufacture would endorse a third party product. most likely the service department/management has decided (or been snowed by the traveling bg salesman) to bolster profits with a snake oil program.
i'd heard that the ptfe (slik50 and other) treatments eventually caused the babbit bearing material to disintegrate after some time. i can't back that up though.
on a positive note i used two litres of bg synthetic two stroke oil when i put my 550 on the road. it was just timing that the new sales guy showed up with a trunk load of their product just as i was wrapping up it's ressurection. i never saw him or any other bg guy since.
other than being very expensive there were no negative side affects. ive used jugs of off brand pwc oil since then with no probs.
