4 stroke question

Post by Coyote »

Yes I know this is a 2 stroke board but I know a lot of you guys have 4 strokes in your stable as well.
What do you do with 'spent' oil? My GS1000 is due an oil change this spring. I have gallon jugs of old oil hanging around. Unfortunatly, Tulsa only has a 'drop off' about once every 5 years. If you miss it, the next window is now about 10 years away.
What to do with all this crap?? Right now I have a 5 gallon bucket with everything imaginable in it. Oil, thinner, brake fluid, mineral spirits, old gasoline and so on. On top of that, I have 3 one gallon jugs of oil, spent coolant and other s**t.
What do I do with all this crap?? How do you guys handle it??
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

Advanced Auto and Autozone take used oil.

Yup, my oil goes to the local car parts store for recycling. NAPA doesn't take it but the chain stores all do.

For all the other stuff - old gas, antifreeze, paint thinner, etc. - our county has a household hazardous waste center that takes it all and disposes of it properly. Actually if the gas isn't too old I just dump it in my car. Why throw it away if it can still be used?

My GS1000 is due for its Spring oil change too. Spring is finally arriving so I guess I'd better go get some oil.

5 years between drop-offs  ? That's stoopid...

The dump/tip/recycle centre managed by my local Council has an oil drop-off 'spot'. There's a large open drum that empties into a larger tank that anyone can tip used oil into anytime they want.
Adjacent is a skip (dumpster) that is exclusively for used oil bottles/containers as well.

I have a 25 litre drum that I collect engine oil, brake fluid etc into - I fill it approx every six months and empty it (at the recycle centre) when it's full...

They also have areas for out-of-date gas bottles, batteries, steel (whitegoods), garden waste, tyres and a 'trash-and-treasure' shed for unwanted but still usable stuff, all apart from the general waste.

Very handy indeed. I thought the US was leading the way in this sort of stuff - what you've described seems pretty backward really...

My 30minute oil change place takes used oil, our city will pick this up also along with hazardous waste.

In Calgary at the NW end of the city there is the Spyhill landfill and recycling centre. You drive in and they have all the containers/skips there with clear signage for disposal of used motor oil, coolant, containers etc.
Very well run and laid out for all manner of disposal.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

The trick is NOt to mix different fluids. Old gas and kerosene and oil mix OK, but brake fluid is a whole different matter and contaminates oil.

If it's already mixed, I think they can probably distill it out, but better too avoid the mix in the future.

We store ours until race day and take it to the track where they always have an oil recycling drum for waste oil.

I simply bring oil, nafta, brake liquid ecc. to a mechanic shop. All of them are part of a mandatory consortium for recycling, every once in while a specially equipped truck withdraws the stuff from the mechanic's drum.
It stand obvious that you must be at least a friend of the mechanic :D ...but, after all, there isn't so many guys who are going around with cans of used oil.

Thanks for the link Strainer. I guess I am the one in the dark here. I will be about 1/2 mile from one of these places today. I'll stop in and ask what I can do with my hazardous mix.

Indeed - it is quite well organised - this is the link to all eight city of Calgary hazardous waste disposal locations. Paint is also one of the items recycled - there is at least one company here that has made a pretty good business out of recycling household paints, both alkyd and latex.

As a general note to all. Call you state/area Environmental Protection agency. They should have a section/office that is paid with your tax dollars to provide guidance on environmentally safe disposal options for most waste materials.
