Gasohol and tank sealants / fibreglass tanks

Post by Craig380 »

Hi all,

this article: http://www.rjmclassic.com/bulletins.html has been posted on a couple of UK classic bike forums.

It says that gas with ethanol (5% or higher) causes problems with fibreglass tanks and sealants.

I believe most gas in the US has ethanol, correct? Have you guys experienced any problems with tank sealants, etc?

cheers, Craig

Craig,

I can confirm that ethanol in fuel will cause some of the resin to leach out with the fuel and it will coat the intake and valves with a sticky goo that leads to bent valves (obviously that relates to 4 strokes).

I have not tried a sealer but I hear that POR works well and is not affected by the ethanol.

The only issue i see is allowing the ethanol time to come back out of the glass matrix before it is sealed.

Caswell epoxy is the way to go for fiberglass tanks.

Craig, that's true to a certain percentage of stations. I'd say around 90% or so. Here in the central US there are several stations where you can still get ethanol free gas. It generally runs 20 t0 25 cents per gallon more than the ethanol crap. There is an ethanol free gas station just 3 miles from home. 8)
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

Por-15 and KBS both work on sealing fiberglass tanks.
