Plastic epoxy

Post by Barry S. »

Anybody know of an epoxy for plastic that is fuel proof? I need some for a plastic PE gas tank that's cracked. Those old tanks crack when you put gas in them, I had 2 do it.

Barry, I have seen a two piece epoxy that you can get at an automotive parts house that is gas resistance..

JBWeld is fuel-proof. I'm sure of it, as my carbs on BlueBoy have not leaked in four years.

Well, maybe, gents. The BIG problem is that those tanks are made of, IIRC, polyethylene (or polypropylene) and no glues/epoxies/whatever seems to stick to that stuff.....and the plastic welder stuff doesn't work either.
The factories must have worked with the plastics boys for a long time to come up with that particular blend.....non-repairable by any method known to man.

You might try checking with a place that has whitewater rafting supplies. It is real popular in WV, and I don't know what type of "plastic" they make the kayaks out of, but they take a pounding, and I see a lot of them strapped on top of cars with patches on them.

I don't know what they are made of, there is a "Plastic fuel tank" repair epoxy at Auto Zone for weed-eaters, etc. Might work.

This might not sound the easiest way to solve it but id look at the possibility of having a tank (or two) made taking a mold off the old one.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

Barry, you can check out these guys. They have a lot of tanks for older bikes and their stuff is first class. We have bought a number of them for various dirt bikes with (usually) big cracks from crashes. Very sturdily built....unlike the thin wall originals....

not sure if it would help, but in the flooring business when we did vinyl floors in hospitals they had to be smooth and continuous to fight germs by not giving them a place to grow.we grooved the seam, heat welded it then knifed smooth the weld .I'd bet if you prepped the area on the tank correctly by beveling as you would a metal weld and had the correct filler rod or scraps of the material to feed into the weld area it would make a nice strong fusion weld.
read this to see......

here's a cheap gun that would do the trick I'd bet.
