GT550 TYPICAL FUEL MILEAGE?

Post by CBWELLS »

Just a very general experience question. Back in '74 I had a NEW left-over '72 GT550. I seem to recall fuel mileage in the 45 to 52 MPG range. I had the bike for about 25K miles & always regretted getting rid of it. Several years ago I got nostalgic & picked up '76 that had a long & storied history, but ran OK. I continued that varied history, ultimately bringing it back from the brink to a decent running condition. Certainly was no "RESTORATION", but a righteous RESURRECTION in any case. It starts & runs very well with just a bit of rough running in the first couple miles until it "warms up". After that it runs great & I'm happy with all that. Lately I've only been able to get about 35 MPG, admittedly in repeated short 96-7MILE) trips to/from work mostly, but with a few longer rides mixed in for fun. So, here's the request. If anyone out there has a good sense of their REAL WORLD GT550 mileage (I'm not talking about flogging the snot out it, but routine casual riding...one-up). please REPLY with what you consider your BEST, AVERAGE, & WORST numbers. I'm not really interested in other models, but I'll find the GT550 info very interesting. Thanks for any info you can offer.

45 MPG (Imperial)/37.5 MPG (US) average combined city/highway. Hasn't changed in 40 years!
Best MPG is on the highway at 60 MPH. 50 IMP/41.5 US.
Worst MPG is on the highway at 100 MPH. 25 IMP/21 US. (Don't ask how I know!!)
Second worst is again on the highway, at 75 MPH running with the choke ON!! 30 IMP/25 US.
The story behind the choke ON starts in Pittsburgh. I rode down to the Kawi 2stroke meet a couple of years ago in Deals Gap and stayed the first night just outside of Pittsburgh. When I got up in the morning I saw that my bike had been moved!! I was PISSED! Someone had knocked her over during the night, but they were good enough to stand her back up again! Checked her over, just a broken signal light.
Checked the fuel tank, still full so I fired her up and jumped on the interstate at 75 MPH. I was still PISSED. 60 miles down the road she dies. Oh crap. Now I'm on the side of the road, dead in the water, in West Virgina!! WTF?? Checked her over and found that STUPID me had left the choke on when I left the motel in Pittsburgh!! Switched over to reserve and hit the first gas station!!

Think of how stupid the average person is, then realise that half of them are more stupid than that.

The older model maybe worse then the newer model?

On my 73 I get 32-33 mpg USA they way I drive not too hard not too easy. But i sure do like to feel its great torque.

so 35 mpg USA sounds OK to me

Just got back from Deals Gap. 2250 miles round trip in a week. Average MPG for the trip, 45 MPG IMP. (37.5 MPG US)! Four days, 1900 miles on the highway at 60-70 MPH, elevations from 250 to 5300 feet, 350 miles of twisties and switch backs at 20-50 MPH!
