my wife had sciatica ,some times she would cry a lot because of the pains.
a guy I used to work(we're still friends after all these years) he's in his 70's now.
he suggested try a faith healer. some times they do work he says.
of course me being me I was sceptical nah I don't believe in that rubbish.
anyway to cut the story short we paid a visit to him and his wife just a normal chit chat 'n' things. wife complained about her sciatica pains.
he said he'll try the faith healing etc. I said we'll try any thing if it'll work. after more then 20 years my good wife swears that he has healed her back.since that day she never had pains any more.
while he had his hand on her head she said she could feel a warm sensation in her lower back.
now I'm not going to say he has fixed it but it certainly made me think!

Kelly,
I realize this is going a little off topic, but you mention the government funded health care programs in in the islands.

I have experience with the UK HNS which wasn't bad but had it's flaws, and the Australian system which I love with a blend of government and private services. Again it's not perfect, but it's a lot better than the medical system in the US.

We have friends in France and Spain and their systems seem to work better than the US for most people most of the time - no system is perfect.

The US actually has a variety of different health care models ranging from Medicare & Medicaid for low income/aged population to the VA system for veterans and the rest of us are mired in a user pays system where we have to get expensive insurance just to get any sort of service and it still costs a fortune.

The problem is that the US system favor those with insurance or who can afford the best, and ignores those at the lower end of the economic spectrum. When people in the US talk about Health care reform, it quickly becomes emotional and political which surprises me as a relative outsider.

The US health care system costs twice as much per capita as any other country and yet our health outcomes are rated 37th in the world. There are lots of factors at play and making substantive changes to that will not be an easy task for anyone.

So how did you guys manage to get a government run system that seems to work reasonably well? Was it because they ran British system of government and implemented similar social support systems or was it just the nature of the population to have more of a sense of the common good?

I know very little of your country and would like to hear your comments.

Juggie, hope you sort things out, gotta look after yourself.

Like TZ says in Oz we have a mix of public and private health care.
Public is free and emergencies get seen to straight away, you have to wait sometimes when real busy for minor stuff.
Private you pay health insurance and you can get seen to straight away in private hospitals...you can still go to public care for free. You get a 30% rebate on your tax for any private insurance you pay. Private insurance covers all sorts of things not just hospital treatment eg ambulances, glasses every year, dental treatment etc.
When you go to the doctor it is free in most practices as the government pays. Sometimes you pay a gap between the government payment and the doctor's fee.
Where I work you get 18 days sick leave a year which you can take at half pay if you want (making 36 days). We get 4 weeks annual leave and 3 months long service leave every 10 years.
I can't complain, but I do anyway.
I don't get the big debate in the US over health care, the US pays a fortune per head for health care that is sub standard by world standards. Health care should be a universal right like water and basic shelter and food. Anyway, it is your country and you run it your way. I am just grateful for the health system we have.
