The Guessing Game......or......

Post by H2RICK »

Why Illiteracy Makes Me Sooooo Upset !!!!

Late 20's buddy says he needs new coils for his single cam Honda 750. OK says I....are yours shot ?? Well, says he, they don't seem to read right on my meter. OK, says I, I have a brand new set of aftermarket coils ready to rock. Buddy looks them over and asks if I can test them. Sure, says I.
OK....4.8 ohms on the primaries....great. Secondaries read 14K ohms and change....perfect.
Hmmmm....says buddy. Well, I'll take them and try them. I say, If you STILL don't have sparks then you've got problems somewhere else......cuz it won't be these.
Next day comes the phone call: I want to return those coils, says he. I say: What's the prob ?? He says I want the stock coils. I say: What's the mold number on your stockers ??
He phones back in 20 minutes or so with the number. I say I'll find a set and phone you back. I find a set and check them out on the meter: 4.8 ohms on the primaries and 14K on the secondaries. I phone him and tell him the good news. He says he's on the way to get them in exchange for the new coils he bought the other day.
He shows up, I show him the readings on the stock coil set I have and then he gets this perplexed look on his face. He says he figures he needs stock coils...but with 3 ohm primaries. I say there ain't no such thing on old Hondas with points ignition.
He says that the DYNA S INSTRUCTIONS CALL FOR 3 OHM COILS !!! I say: You didn't mention anything about Dyna S, buddy !!!
OK, he says, I'll keep the new coils and try them because the Dyna S instructions say that it will work well with the stock coils. He's confused but off he goes.
I have a few quiet minutes to try to figure this out....and then remember we have a new Dyna S kit in the back room. I get the instructions and read them.
In part, it says: "Dyna S will work well with the stock coils and with any coils with a primary resistance of AT LEAST 3 ohms (my emphasis)."

Because buddy failed his language arts classes, he was incapable of reading and interpreting the instructions properly, thus causing me a whole bunch of heartburn and causing himself a whole bunch of running around and wasted gas.

I phoned him back and got him to read the pertinent part from the instruction sheet as above. I asked him if he understood what he was reading. DEAD SILENCE FOR 30 SECONDS !!! I then proceeded to explain (in simpler terms) what that sentence meant.
More silence......then he thanked me for explaining what it all meant.

And my friends all think I've got a "dream job" because I get to work with bikes all day.
Nooooo......I get to work with GOOFS all day. There's a HUGE difference.
As cousin Bob, the mechanic, says: "I can fix the bikes....but I can't fix the riders."

Geck0, I'll be "better" when I have to stop dealing with idiots.....but in my job that will NOT happen anytime soon..(unless I finally retire)....so I'll just have to count to 10 every time when one of these goofs amazes me with another dumb move.

Rick, at these times, the wisdom of Linus van Pelt comes to mind:

"I love humanity; it's people I can't stand."
1976 GT380 - wounded by me, and sold on
2006 SV650S - killed by a patch of diesel and a kerb in Feb 2019
2017 SV650 AL7 - naked and unashamed

At LEAST you didn't shoot him and put him out pf his misery Rick.
So you talk about loss of interpretation of a language, well check the spelling of the first word in the heading in this video.

Maybe that should have read "aT fault", Allan.
How people can expect to convey their thoughts in written form when they can't actually spell and/or use correct grammar to form sentences is totally beyond me. I fear for the future of mankind.

Yes, Craig, Linus is a wise child.

I have had college kid tell me that they never write anything by hand. It's all on a PC/MAC (which is also a PC but I digress) and the software has spell check, so they don't need to know how to spell any more. It's just not important. :?

Rick, that Dyna incident I have bumped into now many times. They just don't read and/or think. Sure they can use a 3 ohm coil but it sucks the juice right out of a battery and the coils tend to overheat (on the street). We won't use them on a race bike because our small batteries don't last. With points I can run all weekend - that's 6 races plus practices. With a Dyna it's less than a day before the battery goes flat. And many of the guys fitting a DYNA ignition are fitting small batteries to their cafe racers to try to fix jetting problems with pod filters and shorty exhausts  .

Thanks for that bunch of Dyna insights, TZ.
For myself, I installed a Dyna S on a brand H single cam 750 that I restored back in 1990 or thereabouts. It worked as advertised and never caused any problems with the battery, however.....that bike was used solely for road riding with little/no round town riding.....so if the Dyna IS/WAS a power hog, I would have never known. I was also running a Bosch SBQ7 headlight with a 60/55 H4 bulb which drew more
power than the lame stock sealed beam, too.
I know the guys on a Kawi 650 board I hang out on are seriously down on Dynas because of the power hog thing....but, IMO, the problem lies with:
AA) the lameazz single phase charging system on the early 650's
BB) the 10 amp/hour battery they're stuck with
CC) low speed stop and go riding cycles

Sooo.....if you're running a Dyna S in anything, make sure you've got a decent charging system (I'm guessing, but probably 180 watts minimum output), good/excellent battery AND don't idle your bike at all, if possible.
